Counselor-Trainees fired for not helping gays

Julea Ward used to be a graduate student at Eastern Michigan University, until she refused to work with a gay client in her school counseling program. She was promptly fired. In a lawsuit against the university she claimed religious discrimination among other things, citing her Christian faith. The federal court disagreed, saying that she refused to follow school rules and the American Counseling Association code of ethics, and thus could be fired. She is one of at least two cases in the courts involving graduate students in trouble for their views about gay people. Another 24 year old woman is being sent to remediation training by her college and warned she could be fired unless she changes her views about homosexuals and transgendered people.

Is It Worth the Cost to Avoid Global Warming?

Conservative writer Jim Manzi is not your orthodox global warming skeptic.  He agrees with the scientific consensus that the earth is warming.  He agrees that the cause of warming is probably man made.  For these heresies (and his willingness to criticize right-wing deniers of these facts) he has caught a lot of flack from conservative commentators such as Rush Limbaugh and Michael Levin.  Still, despite his deviance from the right, Manzi agrees with them in one key area - he thinks that anti-global warming legislation is not worth the cost.

NY Times: Hello, primitive dystopia?

All good things must come to an end. Like that Foreigner concert you went to. Or maybe the time you were totally making out with that hot chick in your dad's 1971 Camaro. Well, the NY Times recently speculated on what life would be like in a world without petroleum and what some people are doing to prepare for it. Hardly ever seeing words like "dystopian" on this website used to describe the present or future it was quite a shock to hear about the perceived imminent demise of humanity and pending civil disorder that so many believe is due to arrive any day now.

Biofuel - gasoline alternatives made from plant matter - has long been promised as a savior that will both provide energy independence and help reduce automobile pollution.  There has, however, always been a problematic trade-off - planting crops for biofuel has reduced the crop space available for food crops.  The more popular biofuels became, the more the cost of food staples would increase.  Now a potential solution finally seems within reach - two companies have recently announced breakthroughs in creating cellulose-based biofuels.

The future of psychiatry... today!

On Wednesday the American Psychiatric Association posted an outline to the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. This is important because mental health professionals use this book as a standard for diagnosing mental illness in patients. Some changes are humdrum while others, such as the idea to include all autism like conditions (such as Asperger's) in a single category, are very controversial.

Analysis of more than 20 epidemiological studies revealed the risk of skin cancer increased by 75 per cent when the use of tanning devices starts before the age of 30, the working group found. This, along with other studies indicating the dangers of tanning beds, have led to a spate of new legislative proposals in both the US and Canada.

Mass injuries and multiple causalities were reported at a Connecticut power plant Saturday morning after a large explosion left a large plume of black smoke hanging over the affected area. There has been quite a bit of controversy regarding the idea that vaccines may not be completely safe. Much of this centered around a 1998 paper published in the reputable journal The Lancet which stated that vaccines were related to Crohn's disease and autism. The journal recently retracted (full access requires subscription) this article, claiming unreported conflicts of interest, falsification of methods and unethical content required it to be withdrawn from the scientific record.
