What does your favorite drink say about you?

Modern Drunkard Magazine's latest issue discusses lighter issues like "You know you're a drunk when...," types of scary bars you've been to, and correspondence from the Great American Beer Festival. However, they took time out to list some popular drinks and what they psychologically say about the imbiber. So what is your favorite alcoholic beverage, and what do you think it means? For extra credit, please feel free to go off topic with tales of your alcohol besotted shenanigans. The end.

I didn't know what the fuck a bellini was but found it entertaining they were making fun of Olive Garden straight off the bat. Then we went to Outback last night and saw the bellini on the menu. This is why I don't know these things...we also vowed never to return. Somehow it was the last of the chains we'd been willing to tolerate.

I always thought of it as the sort of drink old ladies order at buffets - or is that the mimosa? What's the difference? Who cares?

The Bellini actually has a respectable pedigree, surprisingly. I find Champagne cocktails odd, but there are a few that are admirable because they are lethal, I'm thinking of the Death in the Afternoon and the B2C2.

Rum & Coke. Usually Bacardi, but sometimes Captain Morgan. If I'm lucky and want to experiment, a local brand. Also I'm kind of a big fan of Ron Flor De Cana, but for some reason you can't find it very often outside of Central American backwaters.

Let the psychoanalysis begin.

Yeah, I was disappointed not to see the whiskey sour on there. Whiskey's a "man's" drink but the sour's a bit girly.

I like gin martinis with actual vermouth content. 3:1 or 2:1. None of that fake martini crap made with vodka, or making excuses about why one needs to be drinking gin straight from a tiny glass rather than just guzzling it from the bottle if you want to drink straight gin.

I like amaretto drinks, especially Godfathers (+scotch), Godmothers (+vodka), and sours.

I like getting drunk for less than $20, so being able to hold $150 worth of scotch without getting drunk isn't what I consider an accomplishment, it's just a waste of money. Unless that was $150 worth of scotch in just one glass.

I like keeping my sinuses friendly, so I mostly no longer drink in the evening. I use a motorcycle as one of my primary forms of transportation, so I mostly no longer drink during the day. I find that cutting down on drinking minimizes the weird, unbelievable tales that my friends keep telling about me.

As always...mid-shelf scotch.  I used to like rum, gin or vodka mixed with tonic, but something has happened over the years.  When I drink scotch, along with enjoying the flavor, I also get a nice mellow buzz...very relaxing.  However, lately when I drink rum/vodka/gin (again, all mid to middle upper shelf), I don't get the same kind of feeling...mostly it just makes me tired.  Is it possible to get different reactions from alcohol...I mean, it's all booze, right?

In my experience, they all elicit their own responses--a lot of this likely has to do at least with sugar content. Rum, for example, is of course very sugary.

Oh yes, I've heard about the different emotional buzzes from hard liquor even before I was drinking it on any regular basis. Tequila makes you crazy, everclear (and presumably moonshine) makes you angry, rum makes you happy, and scotch, as Raymond Chandler was always happy to report, makes you "floaty" and happy. Bourbon is mellow, hence the whole "sipping whiskey" thing while gin makes you talkative. Never heard much about port or Kahlua, or a lot of the liqueurs-- not enough bang for the buck for a lot of drinkers I ever met.

Those days are over, but I agree with the singularity of the scotch buzz.

I don't know that tequila has ever made me crazy but I definitely know of people for whom that's true. I would say bourbon generally makes me happy but I always thought the talkative nature of gin had more to do with the context I typically drink it in. I could be wrong, though, so I'll have to pay attention and give scotch more of a try for sake of science.

Do you get a happy feeling from walking into a bar and asking to a top shelf liquor? Also, what do you consider top shelf rum or vodka?
