The literary genius of JD Salinger is no more. Mr. Salinger, author of "Catcher in the Rye," among other literary works, is now dead at 91. He died at home in Cornish, NH of natural causes.

Louis Auchincloss also died. I've never gotten around to reading any of Auchincloss's books.

I did once attempt to read Catcher. It's appeal eludes me.

When I was 15, I thought Catcher in the Rye had to be one of the three or four most important novels of the 20th century. By the time I was 25, it barely still made my top ten list. When I was 35, I tried re-reading it and found it so awful that I couldn't even finish it.

I never got past the first few dozen pages of Franny and Zooey or Raise High....

My opinion at 49 is that Salinger, in addition to being batshit insane, was one of the three or four most over-rated and over-hyped writers of the 20th century.

Your authority is not recognized here in Fort Kickass...

When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.
