John Murtha, Congressman from Pennsylvania's 12th district since 1974, has died of complications from gallbladder surgery. He was 77. The longest serving member of Congress from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Murtha was a veteran of the Vietnam war. Retiring as a Colonel from the Marines in 1990, Murtha was known as one of the most hawkish Democrats on the hill. Back in 2002, he voted for the use of force in Iraq. Because of his hawkish position and military experience, Murtha made national headlines when he called for early withdrawal of US troops in 2005.
Murtha also had his share of criticism. He was named an "unindicted co-conspirator" in the ABSCAM case, and had been previously called the "King of Pork" due to his powerful position in Congress.
