Biofuel - gasoline alternatives made from plant matter - has long been promised as a savior that will both provide energy independence and help reduce automobile pollution.  There has, however, always been a problematic trade-off - planting crops for biofuel has reduced the crop space available for food crops.  The more popular biofuels became, the more the cost of food staples would increase.  Now a potential solution finally seems within reach - two companies have recently announced breakthroughs in creating cellulose-based biofuels.

Yes, it's the most tasteful story of the year, the annual Deathpool wrapup. In January of 2009 we all made our predictions for which celebrities would take the big dirt nap during the next year. We have a winner: Baudouin and an observation: we suck at prediction, but we're pretty funny.

Free TV No More Forever?

It's a model that has worked for over half a century - television networks broadcast free TV over the airwaves, and make profits by selling advertising interspersed with their shows.  It's a model that broadcasters say works no more, and one that might soon disappear.

The major networks began rolling out their new television shows for the fall last week and will continue to do so into next week.  There are no clear new breakout hits (although FlashForward has been getting a fair amount of buzz), but a lot of solid shows are returning.

One word - rescission.  Read the article, it's grotesque.  Basically, people paying their insurance fair and square, then getting denied coverage b/c they failed to report some completely unrelated issue (sometimes that they weren't even aware of).  One breast cancer patient had her coverage dropped because she had previously been treated and failed to disclose it.  What was she treated for?  Acne.

It has recently come to light that a Swedish couple has, for the last two years, been raising their first child (referred to by the pseudonym "Pop" in the press coverage) without revealing its gender. While the child's parents obviously know, as well as a select few caregivers, the parents refuse to reveal the child's gender identity to friends, and have taken to dressing the child in clothes appropriate to both boys and girls, refer to it in gender neutral ways, and generally have attempted to let the child pick its own identity.

Taking Down The Billboards

You can see them all over just about any major city.  They are anywhere between 4 feet by 4 feet to as large as 50 feet by 12 feet.  They are illegal billboards - advertising signs which crop up on the sides of buildings without benefit of a required license.  Many property owners view them as a nice way of turning empty space they're paying a mortgage or rent for into some needed cash.  Municipal officials see them as a loss of revenue.  Many people see them as just another piece of clutter on the face of the city.  Others see them as pure eyesores with a number of organizations dedicated to the eradication of advertising blight.  Some cities find them difficult to deal with while others aggressively pursue "find and fine" policies.  There are even cases where local artists have taken matters into their own hands.

The year was 1985 and Anvil were the hottest band on the Canadian metal scene. They toured Europe, America and Japan and played to festival crowds at Monsters of Rock. They counted among their fans the members of Metallica, Motorhead, Guns n' Roses, Slayer and Pantera. Their rock anthem Metal on Metal was a crowd-pleaser that never failed to get heads banging and Anvil were poised for stardom. It never happened, but here's the twist: they never gave up. 35 years later, Anvil are still together, still touring, and still chasing their rock and roll dreams.
