One of Chicago's more affluent neighborhoods has been suffering a rash of late night (or early morning depending on your perspective) street muggings, so far unsolved.  Despite repeated robberies, which all of the victims survived, the race of the attackers was never mentioned in press reports.  We were only told that it was a group of three to four individuals that surround, then attack and beat the victim, stealing wallets and cell phones.

The power of names and a respect for history are about to knock heads up in Rhode Island.  That's because there's a sizeable portion of the citizenry who are convinced the name of the state conjures up the very worst memories for them as a group.  Then there's a sizeable number of the citizenry who say, its been our name throughout our history and people should just get over it already.  In the middle is the state legislature about to decide on a referendum which could force the official name of the state to change.

It seemed like a lovely idea at the time.  A suburban Philadelphia swim club reaches out to a city day camp to afford the primarily black kids the opportunity to swim and frolic the summer away.  Not only would it help fill the suburban swim club's coffers with memberships that had fallen off due to the economy but it would be an affirmation that at least one small piece of suburbia was moving past color as an issue.  Alas and alack, something got into the water beyond the 60 or so black and Hispanic kids from city.  At least, that's the way it appears to day camp and others as the idea lasted a total of one day as the city kids were asked not to return and people are shouting racism.

Thirteen years later, Orenthal James Simpson has been found guilty of a major crime. In 1995, Simpson was acquitted of the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her boyfriend Ron Goldman, and was found liable for damages in a 1997 civil court case. Found guilty on charges of kidnapping and armed robbery, Mr. Simpson's prosecution had a few bumps what with trouble seating jurors and the victims either contradicting themselves or turning against the prosecution.

If you thought the race card had been retired from the deck of 2008 political playing cards after that blow up over Senator John McCain's (R - AZ) reaction to Senator Barack Obama's (D - IL) reaction to McCain's celebrity internet ad, think again. This time former Vermont governor, presidential candidate and primal scream enthusiast, Howard Dean, inadvertently (or advertently) introduced the issue again.

The immensely talented Spike Lee has never been one to shrink from controversy. In the past, he's taken on former US Senator Trent Lott (D - MS), calling him a "card carrying member of the KKK" for being nice to Strom Thurmond. He was reported (falsely he claims) to say that someone should shoot former NRA president Charlton Heston with a ".44 Bulldog." He took on cable channel Spike TV because he thought they were capitalizing on his fame by using his first name. When Lee made a documentary about Hurricane Katrina's devastation of New Orleans, he alleged that federal neglect was as much to blame as a storm to what happened to a majority black city. But, now he's feeling lucky by taking on Clint Eastwood.

US blacks receive inferior cancer treatment compared to whites. Disparities in treatment first documented in 1992 have continued despite all efforts to erase them. Researchers studied treatments for cancer given to more than 143,000 Americans over age 65 from 1992 to 2002 under Medicare, and their findings were published by American Cancer Society.
